Ms. Hiter, all infections are a time of stress on the body and thus represent a special risk for patients with fatty acid oxidation disorders, including MCAD deficiency, as they require extra energy to fight the infection. This includes COVID19 and seasonal influenza. You are right to be concerned about your daughter’s response to COVID. Since she will be too young to qualify for any of the current vaccines, you should do your best to reduce her risk of exposure through masking, distancing, and hygiene. I also urge anyone who has significant contact with her, including eligible family members, to get a COVID vaccine. If people around her aren’t sick, her risk is lowered as well. Finally, she should certainly get  all of the vaccines for which she is eligible including the seasonal flu vaccine. These will at least offer as much protection as possible from non-COVID risks. I hope this helps. Dr. Vockley
