DWQA QuestionsCategory: Questions51 Male needing colonoscopy that has CPT 2
Jonathan Steur asked 6 years ago
I had a positive Cologuard test. I have never fasted in my life more than 12 hours (overnight) and I am unsure how my muscles will respond to 24 hours of fasting. Any suggestions or do’s and don’ts that I should be aware of? My Doctor is unsure as well. I live in St. Louis any experts in the area I can or my doctors can get in touch with? Thanks for any help!

You should certainly not fast for 24 hours while undergoing a colonoscopy or surgical procedure. You should inform your GI physician about your condition and ask them to talk to your metabolic team. Typically, I would restrict the overnight fast to <12 hours with an understanding that you’ll have IV fluids with glucose started early in the morning before you have your procedure. If an early procedure time is not available, you should be admitted to the hospital or an observation unit where an IV with glucose can be started while you wait. The IV should run throughout your procedure and not be stopped until you have fully awaken and started to eat. There are metabolic physicians at St. Louis Hospital and Washington University Hospital that your physicians can consult. Hope this helps. Dr. Vockley
